Sandy is largely a self-taught jewelry artisan, working with gemstones, freshwater pearl, and wire.
Sandy spent her career in the beauty industry, working for companies like Bath and Body Works, Aveda, Guerlain and Victoria’s Secret. Part of her job was trend-spotting, and she often walked the streets of New York City looking for inspiration. Once while in the garment district, she stumbled on an importer of gemstones.
Looking at all the color and sparkle, she didn’t know exactly what she was going to do, but she knew that she was going to do something with those stones
After taking some (frustrating) classes, she began experimenting, and finally when she started working with very thin wire, she found that she could combine colorful stones and wire to achieve the movement that she wanted.
In retrospect, Sandy thinks that her work is influenced by her grandparents, who were wholesale florists. She sat with her Grandma at her workbench while she made arrangements and corsages – putting together colors and binding them with wire - not so very different than what Sandy does with silver wire. With her Grandpa she would walk the flower beds, and he would talk about the wonder of nature. Just as each stone and pearl Sandy uses in her jewelry is its own wonder of nature.
