July 2025 2-D Featured Artist Laura Black

Laura Black is a creative force!  Both an artist and a musician, she moved to Key West from New York City in 1997, lured by the warm weather and vibrant art and music community, and now resides in Ft. Myers Beach.   Largely a self-taught artist, Laura has been drawing and painting since childhood.  Most of her work has been Acrylic, although her most recent passion in Batik, which is primarily what she will be showing at the gallery in July.  Batik is an age-old Indonesian art form, originally created on fabric.  Laura has interpreted this, working with watercolor and wax onto rice paper.   With all her art, Laura’s goal is to create bright details, and fun interpretations of familiar subjects – especially the beach, sea life, tropical birds and nature.   This work has resulted in numerous awards, including one for her new Batik work.   Locally, Laura works with Fort Myers Beach Art Association, Hirdie Girdie on Sanibel, and Harbour View Gallery.
