January 2020 3D Featured Artist Tom Higgins

Tom Higgins is a self-taught artist who has worked in a variety of mediums for over 50 years. The inspiration for the salvage ships came from a simple driftwood wall hanging he saw on the Internet. He took the concept and created his own design using discarded wood from construction sites and adding recycled or little-used items and found objects. He uses items resembling working parts of ships such as rubber washers for life preservers and grommets as portholes.

Born and raised in southern new Jersey, he graduated from Waynesburg College in PA and eventually settled in the Chicago area. He retired from working at the Chicago Tribune in 2006 and moved to Cape Coral in 2012.

“Over the years, I have worked in clay, stone sculpture, stained glass and have done woodworking. I’ve also enjoyed drawing cartoons, making clocks and creating textured acrylic paintings,” concluded Tom. “It’s been gratifying when others appreciate and enjoy my creative endeavors.”
